How to flash Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime / Pro / Premium on Android 10

If you occasionally flash your phone, or have never done it at all, but want to breathe new life into the old, but working “horse” of Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime / Pro / Premium, then this article will help you.

According to this instruction, the author of the article reflashed his Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime phone from the original (factory) firmware (MIUI10, Android 6) to a custom one, that is, not released by the phone’s developer, but built on Android 10. Yes, yes, Android 10. And this for a phone released back in 2016.

The article provides one of the simplest (but by no means the only) methods of flashing the phone. To get the best result, it is recommended to save all data from the phone and completely clear the phone’s memory during firmware (paragraph 3.2). Of course, you can not do this. But custom firmware developers and experienced users recommend doing a full cleanup to minimize possible bugs after such an installation.

Attention. Everything that you do with your phone, you do at your own peril and risk. Neither the author of the article, nor the administration of this site, nor the developers of the firmware or other applications bear any responsibility for any development of events. But do not worry. Even if something happens, the repair wizard will fix almost any problems with your phone.

The links to the files in this manual are intended exclusively for the telephone number indicated in the title of the article. Attempting to flash another phone with these files will result in its inoperability. But this is also not scary, the masters can easily cope with this, of course, for your money.

Procedures not described in this article, as well as a solution to possible failures during firmware can be found on the Internet. But this instruction is so simple that, as a rule, no errors should arise.

Today, flashing the phone is extremely simple and not at all scary. All you need is to follow these steps in order:

  1. Save the necessary data and passwords.
  2. Download files and firmware.
  3. Flash the phone.
  4. Set up a new firmware.

Let's look at these steps in more detail.

1. We save the necessary data and passwords

1.1. Sync all your data with your Google account: Settings - Sync - Google - More - Sync now.

On the computer, go to Google contacts and check that the number of contacts there matches the number in the phone’s notebook. If not (I personally never coincided), then complain to Google and be sure to follow paragraph 1.4.

In google photo, make sure that all the necessary photos and videos are synchronized with your google account. To do this, in Google photo, click the menu icon - Settings - Synchronization - Synchronized folders and check all the folders you need for synchronization.

After that, click on the profile icon in the upper right corner and make sure everything is in sync. If not, turn on WiFi and wait while the phone syncs everything.

1.2. Write down separately the login and password for your Google account, as well as save the usernames and passwords for all available applications (mail, instant messengers, etc.). Do not share this data with anyone!

The author of the article simply wrote out the login and password for the Google account separately, and entered all the other passwords into the password manager and synchronized it with the Google drive. You can find many of these programs on the Play Market by typing “password manager” in the search.

1.3. If you:

  • Do not use Google applications (for example, Google Photo, Google Keep, Google Calendar, etc.),
  • or use not only these programs for data storage,
  • or store the data you need in other applications,

then copy all unsynchronized and important data for you from the phone to the computer (memory card), or save it in any convenient way. It can be music, documents, books, etc. It is also recommended to synchronize the correspondence history of all the messengers you use.

The author of the article in this paragraph saved his favorite music, documents and books to a memory card, and also synchronized the history of correspondence in Viber and Whatsapp.

1.4. In paragraph 1, we have already synchronized contacts with Google account. But it will not be superfluous to save contacts also to a memory card or other reliable place. To do this, open the Play Market and enter backup contacts vcf in the search.

Install any program you like on your phone and make a copy of all your contacts in VCF format in it. Locate the received file on the phone and copy it to any place (computer, flash drive, etc.).

2. Download files and programs for firmware
2.1. Download custom firmware (1.1 GB) from the link .
(the source code of the firmware and its author on the github )
and download the custom kernel (13 MB)

(when installing other firmware, an archive with firmware is often enough).
Write down the downloaded archives to the memory card and insert the card into the phone.

2.3. In the phone’s settings, select “About phone” and press 7 times on “Build number”. A message appears that you are a developer. Go to Advanced Settings - For the developer and enable USB Debugging.

2.4. If you have already unlocked the bootloader, or if you have already installed non-original firmware, during the installation of which the bootloader is unlocked, skip this step.

Download Mi Unlock

Run the program and unlock the bootloader by following the instructions in the program window. In this case, your computer must be connected to the Internet.

2.4. Download to your computer and unzip the archive from the recovery (TWRP).

3. Flash the phone
3.1. Turn off the phone. Connect the phone to the computer with a cable. Hold down the “Volume -” and Power buttons, release the buttons when the phone enters Fastboot mode (a screen with a hare will appear).

Launch Flash-TWRP.bat and wait for recovery to install.

If all is well, then the phone itself will boot into recovery. After that, wait about one minute, during which the phone can automatically reboot.

3.2. Attention, this item will delete all data from your phone! If you want to save your data, you can skip this item.

Click Clear - Format Data. Type “yes” and click on the checkmark.

Then press Back several times to go to the main menu and select Reboot - Recovery.

3.3. Click Clear - Selective cleaning and check only the indicated items:

Dalvik / ART Cache
Cache
System
Data
Vendor

Swipe next to the word “Clear”.

If you skipped point 3.2, then you need to reboot. To do this, press Back several times to go to the main menu and select Reboot - Recovery.

3.4. In the main menu, click Install - Select memory - MicroSD card.

Select the file with the firmware.

If there is also a kernel file, click Add Zip and select the kernel file.

Make a swipe near the inscription “Flash”.

3.5. After completing the firmware, click "Reboot to OS."

If after that you again see a screen with a hare, then something has gone wrong. Do not panic, but simply carefully follow step 3 again from the beginning.

4. Configure the new firmware

4.1. At the first boot, the system will ask you to enter your username and password from Google account. After that, synchronization should automatically turn on and pull up all the data - contacts, photos, notes, calendar, etc.

4.2. Set the system language and keyboard input. I’m very used to the hardware buttons on the phone. If you do too, then remember to turn them on. To do this, go to Settings - System - Buttons and disable the first item.

4.3. Face recognition function is also here! Go to Settings - Security - Unlock by face and configure. Immediately you can configure the familiar fingerprint unlock function.

4.4. By a long press on the desktop, you can select Styles and wallpapers, and customize the appearance of the system.

4.5. If there are fewer contacts in the Google account than there were on the phone, then go to the contacts on the phone and click on the three bars in the upper left corner. Then Settings - Import, select vcf. file and specify the path to it on the phone.

Then it remains to transfer previously saved files (music, books, documents, etc.) to the phone, install the necessary applications, and everything is ready to work.

Below are screenshots of the new firmware.
