VKontakte, MIPT and GSOM SPbSU have created a machine learning course for computer science teachers

VKontakte together with MIPT and GSOM SPbSU launches a free educational course for teachers of computer science. They will learn the basics of machine learning and will be able to use new knowledge in their work. Also among the topics are IT project management and student motivation. Teachers who complete the course will receive a certificate of professional development.

Any teacher can take the course. Recording is already open: stepik.org/course/71439/promo

The course will be hosted on the stepik.org platform. It consists of 21 videos, each of which is devoted to a separate topic - classes can be completed at a convenient pace until August 24. In half of them, theory will be understood, and in the other half, teachers will have to put new knowledge into practice. Videos last an average of 7-15 minutes - it is convenient to watch on the road or in a pause between other things. Teachers will also receive homework and materials for further study, and in the special community VKontakte will be able to ask clarifying questions to the organizers and share experiences with colleagues.

Among the teachers of the course: Andrey Raigorodsky, Director of the PhysTech School of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Pavel Kalaydin, Director of Artificial Intelligence Research on VKontakte, and Margarita Gladkova, Senior Lecturer, Department of Operational Management, Graduate School of Management, St. Petersburg State University.

The course is divided into three modules.

  • Eight weeks devoted to ML. Teachers will study the theoretical foundations of machine learning and will consider how VKontakte applies them in practice: in advertisements, smart news feeds, content promotion, safe searches and other products.
  • For two weeks, teachers will comprehend the management of IT projects. They will learn how to build projects from scratch, and will also receive methodological recommendations with which they can transfer skills to students.
  • The last lesson will affect the features of motivation of students. Teachers will learn more about effective ways to work with students and approaches to maintaining attention.

When the course on stepik.org is completed, all videos will be posted on VK. Anyone can see them, but in this case, receive feedback and a certificate of advanced training will not work.

Pavel Kalaidin , director of research in the field of artificial intelligence VKontakte:

β€œMachine learning is one of the most high-tech and promising areas in IT. But in order to become a good ML-specialist, you need to study a lot and for a long time. We believe that computer science teachers can interest children in machine learning right at school. We conducted a survey among teachers of computer science, identified the most interesting and important areas. And also learned about the formats of information consumption and learning habits. The program compiled on the basis of these data turned out to be balanced: it develops not only professional, but also β€œsoft” skills, which are so important for teachers. ”

Andrey Raigorodsky , Director of the Physics and Technology School of Applied Mathematics and Informatics MIPT:

β€œThe FPMI today occupies a leading position in Russia in science and education at the intersection of mathematics and computer science. One of the most important areas that are developing within the framework of our PhysTech School is artificial intelligence. We believe that it is very important to share our experience with schoolchildren and their teachers, students of other educational institutions, as well as with everyone who loves mathematics and computer science. Our free deep learning school has been working successfully for a long time. When our VKontakte partners, who opened the artificial intelligence laboratory in the Institute of Physics and Mathematics in 2019, offered us to make a new free course for teachers, we took up this task with great enthusiasm. Personally, I am convinced that this course will be very useful for teachers of computer science and mathematics in all regions of Russia, will open for them and their students a lot of new things, interesting and modern. ”
