Coronavirus Control

We continue to publish news on the participation of the FOSS community in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Fresh headlines:

Canonical goes self-sustaining

Mark Shuttleworth, in his address dedicated to the release of Ubuntu 20.04, said that Canonical has long been independent of its personal financial investments and has become self-sufficient, according to OpenNET and CNews. Thus, the company's financial report for 2018 shows a gross income of $ 83 million and a profit of $ 10 million. And Shuttleworth does not abandon the intention of entering an IPO and turning Canonical into a public company.

The main reason why Linux is still (response to criticism)

The debate about the suitability of GNU / Linux for ordinary users has been going on since time immemorial. And the next round of these disputes began on an article by Habré, the main complaint in which to GNU / Linux is “ this is not a system, but a heap of diverse crafts wrapped with electrical tape ”. The key answer point is that GNU / Linux is a fundamentally new system in which users not only stupidly poke their mouse, but get significantly more features and that’s why it is valuable. Who is right - judge for yourself, see links.

Delta Chat received from Roskomnadzor a requirement for access to user data

OpenNET writes - the developers of the Delta Chat project reported that they received from Roskomnadzor a requirement to provide access to user data and keys that can be used to decrypt messages, as well as registration in the registry of information dissemination organizers. The project rejected the request, citing its decision that Delta Chat is only a specialized mail client, whose users use the mail servers of providers or public mail services to send messages.

Complication of console commands, 1979−2020

On Habré there was a translation of interesting material, where the evolution of command line tools over the past forty years is tracked. Has the UNIX way survived or have modern systems gone very far from its traditions? Anyway, is the principle of the author of “Philosophy of UNIX” by Doug McIlroy “ Do one thing, but do well ”. Examples of different teams, their arguments and functionality are considered. So, for example, in 1979 the cat team had only one option, and in 2017 - already 12.

Lenovo will transfer three flagship laptops on Linux

Lenovo, China, intends to install IBM’s Fedora distribution on its three flagship GNU / Linux laptops, CNews reports. We are talking about the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2, ThinkPad P53 and ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8. In the future, the initiative may be expanded to the entire lineup of the company. Recall, Lenovo bought the business of manufacturing computers from IBM in 2004. Another interesting fact is that in December 2019, the Chinese government approved a three-year plan to completely abandon American computers and software in government agencies, the publication complements. Ars Technica has also released material on this subject under the heading, which can be translated as “Lenovo has joined Dell at the“ OEM Linux Laptop Club ”.
