Floppies for Dreamcast

Some time ago, flipping through a forum with materials on prototypes of consoles, I came across photos of an addon for Dreamcast with a ZIP drive.

It was supposed to use floppy disks with a capacity of 100 megabytes to save network data, such as e-mail and distribution of additional content for games, for example, new maps for Quake III. In this case, floppy disks were formatted so that they could not be read or written in a conventional drive for a personal computer. But this problem had to be solved with the release of special software.

Also on the front panel of the drive is a USB port. Apparently, Sega planned to release new add-ons, including those with USB support, but maybe it was needed only for debugging.

Unfortunately, even before the end of development, Sega started having financial problems and the production of both the console itself and all add-ons for it was minimized. But most likely, even if the prototype came out, it would not be very popular because of the estimated price of 199 dollars.

It would be interesting to hold this device in your hands, but this is unlikely. This instance is the only surviving and last time surfaced on eBay in 2007.
