How the registrar checks the availability of a domain name on the example of REG.RU

This article is neither advertising nor anti-advertising of the REG.RU service , as well as of other companies mentioned below. I am not a REG.RU employee or an interested party; the essence of the writing is exclusively entertaining and educational.

So let's go!

Background

To begin with, I did not and do not do cybersquatting (and even if I did, it’s obviously not through the web interface), however, one of us doesn’t have a crazy idea when buying domains to check beautiful names for accessibility (and especially on such long self-isolated evenings).

The same thing happened to me, adding to the basket what I came for, I decided to see a couple of beautiful words and brands. What was my surprise when the first two verified domains were first declared free:

And after that they were automatically added to the basket:

At the same time, the WHOIS gave the expected result for both domains :

state: REGISTERED, DELEGATED, VERIFIED

Having reached the payment page, I wrote off what I saw to a one-time share (with whom it doesn’t happen) and interrupted the registration process. The attempt to repeat was successful, but I did not dare to pay and look at the result.

The next item was checking this "feature" through a direct URL, of the form:

https://b2b.reg.ru/buy/domains?dname=<domain>

Where in the place of “domain” should be the desired domain name, in my case it was Yandex :

Yes, as a respectable citizen, I immediately wrote to the support service and began to wait for an answer, entertaining myself with screenshots “as a keepsake”:

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or not , but in an attempt to make a similar screenshot with the kremlin.ru domain, this “feature” was covered by the registrar and no longer appeared on any domain.

A little later, a response came from registrar support, which assured me that I would still not be able to register these domains. And a little later they gave a more detailed comment:
REG.RU . . , .

: . . ( , ). , .

. , .

, , REG.RU , ( ) , .

20 , . 99,99% .

, , , , Whois-, . , , .

, - , . 0,01%

From amusing observations, I can only say that all the tested domains belonged to the * .RU zone and the registrar was NIC.RU (aka Ru-Center) , this did not appear in any other zones.

That's all, I will be glad to talk in the comments.

Health to you and your loved ones.

PS I have no complaints about the REG.RU service , I myself have been their client for a long time and hope to continue our cooperation with them.
