Information message 404 - not only a mistake, but also a holiday

4.04 all those involved in the World Wide Web, and webmasters in particular, celebrate Internet Day (St. Isidore of Seville - the patron saint of the network).

On this day, I want to congratulate everyone involved in the operation of this infrastructure, without which many no longer represent modern society.

I will not list the many professions that work for the benefit of the Web, because for a simple layman we still remain "computer scientists."

I just want to dwell on the stories of the emergence of this message (official, alternative, their own).

Those involved are probably aware that 404 is a three-digit status code, rooted in the dashing 90s.

The HTTP version 0.9, which appeared in 1992, included three-digit status codes.
The first indicated the type of message: 1 - informational, 2 - success, 3 - redirection, 4 - client error, 5 - server error.

The second digit denoted a subgroup of messages, the third - a specific message in this group.
Codes like 200 (“good”) and 304 (“have not changed”) we never see, because instead of these numbers, browsers display the contents of pages.

But error 404 (“not found”) is well known to everyone.

Any user who incorrectly entered the page address in the browser line or clicked on a link to a nonexistent page encountered it.

But this is a boring official version.
