IoT-gateway for industrial protocols based on i.MX6 and Linux

WISE-710 is a universal device that can simultaneously be a gateway for industrial interfaces, a device for collecting and processing data, a hub for IoT devices and a router. Built on SoC i.MX6 and runs on Ubuntu or Yocto Linux.

In fact, it is a compact computer in an industrial design with built-in I / O interfaces for connecting any automation, sensors and other industrial peripherals. Together with the device, developers have access to open SDKs for building the Linux kernel and programs, as well as options with pre-installed EdgeLink software that supports more than 200 proprietary industrial protocols, as well as open protocols like MQTT, Modbus, etc.

In the article, we analyze the device functions and use cases.

Specifications

The device is equipped with a powerful processor to run productive programs: local storage and data processing, protocol conversion and computing. Wireless communication modules allow you to use the device as a standalone IoT gateway and a communication device with the object.

  • Processor: ARM Cortex-A9 i.MX6 two 1GHz cores
  • Drive: 8GB eMMC
  • RAM: 1GB DDR3
  • Micro-SD slot: 1
  • Interfaces: 8 digital input-output ports, RS-485 / RS-232
  • Ethernet: 2x 1 Gb / s ports
  • Expansion Modules: LTE, WiFi, I / O Ports
  • USB: 1x port in Host mode

The device can be installed both on a DIN rail and on any surface using mounting holes on the bottom of the case. For reliable mounting of the interface contacts, screwless clamp terminals are used.

Modern SoC (System on Chip) i.MX6 has low power consumption and does not require active cooling or even installing a heat sink on the processor. The photo below shows the WISE-710 board . During operation, the device almost does not heat up. To work with sensitive data, the device has a built-in cryptographic module ATECC508A, which allows you to perform operations with private keys without the possibility of extracting the key in clear form. This protects against data compromise and key leakage in case the device is stolen.

Interface Expansion Modules

WISE-710 has an onboard mPCIe port for connecting expansion modules. It can be used to connect branded Advantech modules and third-party boards, such as modems, controllers, etc. The back cover of the device opens without screws, which allows you to quickly connect modules. At the moment, we are developing expansion modules that we are going to introduce in the near future.

For easy integration with the WISE-PaaS cloud system, WISE-710 devices can be delivered with the pre-installed Edgelink agent, compatible with more than 200 device drivers, which allows you to combine industrial systems from different manufacturers to connect to a single cloud the platform.

Open SDK

Along with the device, a free toolchain is supplied for self-assembly of Yocto Linux for the needs of the customer. If necessary, the operating system can be completely reconfigured, including the OS kernel. For example, to install Linux-RT patches that allow you to perform real-time operations.

Conclusion

The WISE-710 device immediately replaces a whole set of devices: a network router, and a switch, a data acquisition and transmission device, a programmable logic controller, and others. A completely open platform provides unlimited opportunities for developing your own solutions for automation, data collection, local computing and much more.
