GSM IoT Provider in Housing and Public Utilities (Part 1)

I read the author’s articles Interferabout the difficulties in Iot and decided to talk about his experience as an IoT provider.

The first article is not advertising, most of the material is without models of equipment. I will try to write the details in the following articles.

I don’t see the problems of using GSM modems to collect data from metering devices, because I took part in creating a collection system from 795 residential buildings, the frequency of the survey every hour, stability was confirmed by three years of operation.

The geography of the working lot network now has more than 5,000 collection points in Russia.

Difficulties


  • Connection timeouts - in the basement with communication quality, to put it mildly, not very, there are two options: leave it as it is or change the place of the connection point but transmit a small amount of data.

  • Personnel - yes there are few of them, but the problem is a little different; not every good specialist agrees to climb into the basement without material incentive.

  • Zoo equipment can be a lot of trouble, especially when there are more than 100 different models and modifications, but there are ready-made solutions.

  • Data collection server - I do not advise reinventing the wheel and writing from scratch, unless of course this is not a project for 100,000 points and equipment on the site of one model.

  • The lack of installation quality at the facilities, crutches at each facility, I will give examples from the personal archive, draw your own conclusions how you can connect to it without nerves (examples below)

After 10 minutes of experiments, I came to the conclusion that the train didn’t the best place to interview the instruments in the basement, but I managed to get readings per day along with the sentries without any problems.
