Intel Atom P5900: Atom's Second Coming

In 2018, Intel abandoned the Atom name for its processors, however, of course, the market situation did not change the removal of the word. Processors need different, and massive data grinders, and nimble kids, taking their own due to specialization and efficiency. The ghost of Intel Atom was clearly traced to many of the company's new models, so no one was surprised when it suddenly materialized again. So, meet, Intel Atom P5900 - the first series of the second season.

As expected, the second Atom life was given by the new Intel Tremont microarchitecture , which we talked about at the end of last year. Recall its main characteristics:
  • process technology 10 nm,
  • 32-byte L1 / L2 Core class branch predictor
  • 6 instruction decoders with random execution,
  • 10 executive ports
  • dual loading / unloading conveyors,
  • 4 cores in one module,
  • L2 cache up to 4.5 Mb.

The new family of revived Atoms includes highly specialized processors for network needs, and specifically for base stations of wireless networks. Intel draws attention to their functionality, consistent with this specific load:
  • Intel Dynamic Load Balancer - technology for balancing traffic between the cores,
  • Intel QuickAssist - hardware acceleration of protection and compression algorithms,
  • hardware support for cryptography,
  • support for network technologies adapted from Intel Ethernet 800 chips.

In total, the lineup has 4 models with different numbers of cores.

The processors support up to 128 GB DDR4, 32 PCIe lines (16x PCIe 3.0, 16x PCIe 2.0), up to 8 USB ports (4x USB 2.0, 4x USB 3.0), 16 SATA ports.

Obviously, the fate of new processors is to be hidden deep inside specific network equipment. However, after the P-series, Intel has no reason not to resume all the others, and there were many of them at one time . So the second season promises to be saturated.
