IPv6 only networks in US government

The Office of the Presidential Administration asked for comments on the new IPv6 transition guidelines for US government agencies.

The new version of the manual notes that dual-stack support creates additional operational difficulties and recommends that internal government networks switch to IPv6-only instead of dual stack. Of course, public services should preserve IPv4 addresses for the duration of the transition.

The manual also requires that by 2023, all new systems put into operation support IPv6. Besides,

  • At least 20% of network-connected resources should be IPv6-only by the end of 2023
  • At least 50% of network-connected resources should be IPv6-only by the end of 2024
  • At least 80% of network-connected resources should be IPv6-only by the end of 2025

This seems to be a pretty aggressive plan and it will put noticeable pressure on the industry. For example, various "state clouds" will have to at least support IPv6, and possibly work in IPv6-only mode.
