Marginal notes on the international conference PGConf.Russia 2020. Highlights and slides

The international conference PGConf.Russia 2020 of all post-Congressists in Russia and most of the world, this year was hosted by the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University. My general mood after the conference is expressed in one picture.

(Forgive me, fans of Nautilus, but it’s still very kindly. Here you can consider the word “America” as part of the phraseology “discover America”, that is, to learn something new before everyone else) If you are interested in a few highlights of the reports, please under cat.

General photo of most speakers.

We take the four best reports, in my opinion, stock up on 5 minutes of patience and get it!

  • O. Kozlov and M. Tsvetkov New developments for PostgreSQL technology of non-volatile memory.

I’ll say a little easier, “How INTEL began to expand expansion cards to exhibitions,” and the Swarm64 startup speeds up analytical queries to Postgress. A little more ridiculous, in my memory this is practically the first conference where the Tsar was played not by Mikhalkov Intel did not present any pure processor or chipset solutions. However, in business, the Elbrus processor, together with its motherboard, stood in another wing of the building as part of the general exposition. Your affairs are wonderful, TSMC!

What is offered here? In a very simple language - Intel went on the offensive in NVMe storage systems. At the same time, offering solutions on FPGA systems to accelerate API systems that are advantageous to speed up by splitting actions into many parallel threads. That is how the result shown on the slide was obtained. As a result, 1TB base can be put in memory and get just chocolate speed.

  • A. Afinogenov How I stopped worrying and transferred 60K lines of code from 150 PL / SQL procedures to Postgres

If you are planning to read, then, also, catch the alternative headline “How 3 modern Spartans automate the country's railways and what will happen if our managers find out about it.”

It was:

It was necessary to do and done!

An example of a creative approach to optimization.

Total: in terms of productivity, full parity, 3 people over half a year proved that, even without special experience, but under the systemic guidance of Postgres Pro employees, miracles of migration can be done. I wish success to such a small but very productive team - at least 15 industrial installations are ahead.

  • A. Korotkov PostgreSQL Bottlenecks # 2

Bottlenecks Postgress, part two. At home, such experiments can not be repeated, but in the cloud - easily. How to torture a server with three pieces of code.

Once again, experiments were done on relatively serious cloud systems,
with a full understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of Postgres architecture. There is something to think about.

  • Bruce Momgian Non-Relational PostgresSQL

Non-relational operators in Postgres.

The following was a detailed account of several hundred pages of documentation. To Bruce's credit, it was all set out with excellent American humor. All scripts are available for download and experiments from the site of Bruce himself. Address in the form of a squirrel gnawing nuts of knowledge.

Afterword. All conference materials will be available on the conference website after some time. Enjoy reading to everyone! I thank the speakers for the excellent, very vital reports!
