Firefox Preview Nightly for Android gets support for uBlock Origin

As promised , Mozilla moved the first extension, uBlock Origin, from the Recommended Extensions Program to the nightly version of Firefox Preview (code-named “Fenix”). Already, you can install it and enable ad blocking in the next version of Firefox for Android.

Mozilla recently released Firefox Preview v3.0 with new features and improvements. Following user requests to add extension support, the company announced on its blog that extension support will appear in Firefox Preview in January 2020, and that it is working to add extensions to their list of Recommended Extension Programs first.

“Bringing GeckoView and Firefox Preview in line with the APIs that were previously supported in Firefox for Android will not happen overnight. For the remainder of 2019 and until 2020, we are focused on supporting custom extensions from our Recommended Extension Program, which work stably on mobile devices and support many features, ”said Phillip Quish.

Firefox Preview Nightly, based on GeckoView, now supports WebExtensions, and uBlock Origin is the first extension added after the update.

To install uBlock Origin in Firefox Preview Nightly:

  1. Download and install Firefox Preview Nightly from the Play Store ;
  2. Launch Firefox Preview Nightly, click on the three-point menu and go to Settings;
  3. In the "Advanced" section, enter the "Add-ons", which is displayed above the "Languages" section;
  4. You will see uBlock Origin as a recommended add-on, click the “+” icon to install.

You can control uBO by going to its settings. After installing uBO, the Add-ons Manager button will appear in the Firefox Preview Nightly menu. In the near future, you can expect more extensions available for installation in the "Recommended" section in Firefox Preview Nightly.

Since the summer of 2019, Mozilla has been trying to compare the functionality of next-generation Firefox for Android with the existing version. Because one of the most important features that Firefox Preview lacked was extension support.

While Mozilla is working on a new browser, the stable version of Firefox for Android has settled forever on version 68 and receives only spot updates. Ordinary users can continue to use the stable version of Firefox until the release of Firefox Preview, which will become the main browser sometime in the first half of this year.

Firefox Preview Nightly is updated on the Play Store twice a day using the master branch code .
